How the UK eVisa system works
A plain-English overview of the digital immigration system that has replaced physical BRPs.
What an eVisa is
An eVisa is a digital record of your immigration status, linked to your identity document, accessed through a UKVI account at gov.uk/evisa.
For official guidance, see gov.uk/evisa.
BRPs have been phased out
Physical BRPs were phased out; most expired on 31 December 2024.
For official guidance, see gov.uk/evisa.
Proving your status
You prove your status to employers, landlords and others using a share code from the Home Office “View and Prove” service, rather than a physical card.
For official guidance, see gov.uk/evisa.
Travel
Expired BRPs stopped being accepted for international travel after 1 June 2025.
For official guidance, see gov.uk/evisa.
